Voices – Brad Harris

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27

Remembering when I was very young, we didn’t have many choices when it came to media. There were a handful of radio stations to choose from that were clear enough to listen to. We had two network TV stations to choose from using our ‘rabbit ears antenna’. Voices we were hearing then were much milder than today. Many programs taught how to love your neighbor and to do the right thing. The imperative of journalism was to find the truth.

Today with information technologies peaking we are hearing many more voices. They deliver messages to us day and night using sincerity, repetition and very high volume in the hope to persuade us. In a room full of people, it is the loudest voice that grabs and demands our attention. We are forced to listen. Nevertheless, volume alone doesn’t add validity to a message.

In a prophetical description of the Messiah, Isaiah 42:2 says; “He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets.” Elsewhere, the Lords’ voice is described as a gentle whisper. 1Ki. 19:12. In Hebrews we are told, “The Lord has already spoken to us many times, and in various ways…” Jesus spoke with a voice of love, authority and reasoning. He has told us all we need to know about salvation, about how to live. If we pray, stay in the Word and seek Him, we will hear His voice. Will we listen?

Lord, help us to have discernment with all that we hear. May we listen intently to the voice that loves us most, that matters most. The voice of Truth. Amen
